The Boston Herald did an excellent review of David’s concert last night in Northampton. Lauren Carter’s definitely been bitten by the bug!
David Archuleta may have settled for second place on the seventh season of “American Idol,” but he got a pretty good consolation prize: a career.
If Monday night’s sold-out performance at Pearl Street in Northampton was any indication, Archuleta has the ingredients to not just excite fans in a dingy nightclub on his first solo tour but to play bigger venues in the near future.
For 75 minutes Archuleta flashed his megawatt style, bounced across the stage with giddy energy in a T-shirt, vest and scarf and commented repeatedly on how awesome everything was.
Fans - some who had been waiting at the club since 9 a.m. - went into hysterics, waving signs, snapping photos and reaching out to touch their Idol.
What may get lost in the din is how talented Archuleta is. From the opening notes of the spirited “Touch My Hand” to the show-closing cover of Robbie Williams’ “Angels,” the Utah 18-year-old didn’t miss a note.
He hopped on the keyboard frequently, flashed his signature pop-soul sparkle on the singles “Crush” and “A Little Too Not Over You,” and proved he can nail other styles with equal conviction, from the intense, funked-out “Waiting for Yesterday” to the lighthearted “Works for Me.”
At times, Archie pushed the energy level. The unreleased, techno-flavored “Zero Gravity” even got members of his four-piece band bouncing. Yet he worked ballads, such as “Somebody Out There” and the violin-assisted “To Be With You,” with equal success.
Before a medley of his personal favorites, including U2’s “One” and Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours,” he took time to pose for a group photo with fans. That, too, he noted, was awesome.
In sum, Archuleta may be the perfect pop concoction: looks, talent and charm, with a sound that appeals to teens and grandparents alike. “American Idol” may have put him on the map, but this young star casts a spell that’s all his own.
